The Value of Graphic Design

Design is very much like beauty – ‘it is in the eye of the beholder’, and is very much subject to personal taste and the million and one other things that shape our perceptions as we travel through life. But there are undeniable truths about what makes good design.

Good graphic design is not about style or fashion; it is about communication. It adds credibility and builds the image that will define how your business is perceived. That image is one of the most important properties any organisation can possess, and is the only thing a potential customer can connect with.

Good graphic design is more important now than ever before. Like it or not, we live in a world that is over-communicated. We are bombarded with messages every minute of the day from ads on TV and the radio, billboards and posters on every street corner, leaflets in our post, e-mail and newspapers, pop-ups and banner ads on websites, social networks and even our mobile phones.

It takes good design for a message to cut through all that noise and be remembered. In some cases, a business may only have a split second to make an impression, and then it needs to be the right impression. Modern consumers make vast assumptions about a business just by the look of their logo, advert, website or brochure. In this light, good design is not just the difference between beautiful and boring, but also the difference between customers choosing you or choosing your competition.

Legendary graphic designer, Paul Rand, once said that design adds value faster than it adds cost; and he’s right. The Design Council UK conducted a study and found that for every £100 a design-savvy business spent on design, its turnover increased by £225. When you take all of the above into account, good design is not an expense – it’s an investment, and it has long been proven that businesses that invest wisely in their future are best positioned to succeed.

You only get one chance to make a first impression, make it count.
