The Difference Between Marketing, Branding and Advertising

There is a lot of confusion around the difference between marketing, branding and advertising. Searching for the difference will only bring up hundreds of results. We decided to have a crack at it and hopefully clear up any confusion.

Marketing
Marketing is defined as the process of developing, promoting, selling and distributing a product or service to your target audience. It is also how you want consumers to perceive your brand. It is the image you are presenting and the vision you are conveying in such a way that your audience resonates with it. How you market your brand will determine how effectively your message and image will be accepted by consumers.

Branding
Branding is defined as the promotion of a product or company through marketing, advertising and design. It is how consumers perceive your brand, product or service. This perception is influenced by all aspect of your company, including the name, logo and look and feel. Your branding influences consumer’s perceptions of your brand, which in turn affects the success of your campaign and company.

Advertising
Advertising is defined as a form of marketing used to persuade audiences into purchasing your product or service. It is the actions you take to persuade them such as creating print, digital or social media ads, producing TV commercials, scripting radio ads, writing blog posts etc etc.

Marketing, advertising and branding in practice are interconnected and thus the lines between them do get a little fuzzy. It is important to understand the differences so that you can use the right term at the right time. When the right terminology is used, you can be better understood. When you’re better understood, better work can be done resulting in better business success.
